Thanksgiving dinner and meal sign up sheet, beyond the potluck
Not every Thanksgiving is a potluck. The same sheet works when the host cooks and guests sign up for everything else:
- Family Thanksgiving: arrival times, who brings folding chairs, and who stays for dishes
- Church or community dinner: serving shifts, setup, cleanup, and drivers for meal delivery
- School Thanksgiving feast: parent volunteers, paper goods, and one slot per classroom dish
- Food drive: canned goods by category, with a cap on each so the pantry gets a full meal
How big a turkey, and when to thaw it
Whoever claims the turkey slot needs these two numbers:
- Fridge thawing time for every 4–5 lb of frozen turkey
- 24 hours

Thanksgiving potluck timeline
- 3 weeks before: send the sign-up link so people can plan and shop
- 2 weeks before: confirm who has the turkey, and ask directly for anything still open
- Week of: turkey goes into the fridge to thaw (see the chart above)
- 2 days before: the automatic reminder goes out with each person's dish and arrival time
- Day of: hot dishes arrive in the last hour; put food away within two hours of serving
When do guests sign up for a potluck?
Later than most hosts expect. On SignupKit potluck sheets, the median guest signed up 6 days before the event, and more than a third waited until the final three days.
- Send the link three weeks out: the turkey and the big sides are claimed by the early few
- Do not panic when half the sheet is empty the weekend before; most guests sign up that week

A home oven fits the turkey or three casseroles, not both. Ask on the sign-up whether each dish arrives hot, needs reheating, or is served cold, and plan around it: slow cookers for mashed potatoes and stuffing, the oven for anything that must crisp, and cold dishes like salad, cranberry sauce, and pie need no heat at all.
Thanksgiving lunch sign up sheet for work
An office Thanksgiving lunch runs on the same food sign up sheet, with a few changes for a workday:
- Post the link in Slack or Teams, not reply-all email
- Ask the office manager to cover the turkey or order a catered main
- Hold it the Tuesday or Wednesday before, since many people take Thursday and Friday off
- Add one slot for a coworker to bring a vegetarian main
