How to Respond to an RSVP
Copy-ready replies for yes, no, text, email, and wedding cards
To respond to an RSVP, reply by the date on the invitation, using the method it asks for (a link, a reply card, a text, or an email). Say clearly whether you are coming, how many people, and anything the host asked for, like a meal choice. Below are replies you can copy.

The four rules of responding to an RSVP
- Reply by the deadline, even if the answer is no
- Use the method the invitation asks for: the RSVP link, the reply card, or the number given
- Only count the people named on the invitation; do not add a guest unless it says "and guest"
- If your answer changes, tell the host as soon as you know
How to respond yes to an RSVP
| Channel | Example reply |
|---|---|
| Text | "Hi Maria! We'd love to come to Leo's party on Saturday. It'll be 2 of us: me and Sam. Thanks for inviting us!" |
| "Hi Jordan, thank you for the invitation. I'm happy to confirm I'll attend the dinner on March 14. I'm vegetarian, if that helps with planning. See you there!" | |
| Work event | "Thanks for the invite. I'll be there on the 12th." |
| Online RSVP link | Choose "Yes," enter the number attending, and answer any meal or dietary questions. |
How to decline an RSVP politely
Thank them, say no clearly, and wish them well. You do not owe a detailed reason.
| Channel | Example reply |
|---|---|
| Text | "Thank you so much for inviting us! Unfortunately we can't make it Saturday, but we hope Leo has the best birthday." |
| "Hi Jordan, thank you for the invitation. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend, but I hope the evening is a great success." | |
| Wedding | "We are so sorry to miss your big day. Sending all our love and congratulations to you both." |
How to fill out a wedding RSVP card
- 1
Write your names on the "M" line
The M stands for Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Mx. Write your names as you would like them on the place card, for example "Jordan and Sam Lee."
- 2
Tick accepts or declines
Some cards say "joyfully accepts" and "regretfully declines." Tick one.
- 3
Fill in the number attending
If it says "__ of 2 seats reserved," write how many of those seats you will use.
- 4
Choose meals if asked
Write initials next to each meal, or tick the box for each guest.
- 5
Mail it back by the date
The envelope is usually addressed and stamped already.
Changing your RSVP
Plans change, and hosts would much rather hear it early. Tell them directly as soon as you know, especially for a wedding or a seated dinner where your plate is already paid for: "I'm so sorry, something has come up and I can't make it after all. I wanted to let you know right away." If the invitation used an online RSVP link, update your answer there too.
