White Elephant Rules
How to play, how stealing works, and the variations
In a white elephant gift exchange, everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. On your turn you either open a new gift or steal one that is already open. A gift can be stolen three times before it is frozen, and the game ends when the last gift is opened. Most groups also call it a Yankee swap or Dirty Santa.

How to play white elephant
- 1
Set a price limit
Usually $20 to $30. Everyone brings one wrapped gift at that limit, and the gifts go in a pile.
- 2
Draw numbers
Each player draws a number from a hat. That is the turn order.
- 3
Player 1 opens a gift
They pick any wrapped gift from the pile and open it so everyone can see.
- 4
Every next player opens or steals
They either open a new wrapped gift or steal an opened gift from someone else.
- 5
Whoever is robbed goes again
They open a new gift or steal a different one. They cannot steal back the gift just taken from them on the same turn.
- 6
Freeze a gift after three steals
The third person to steal a gift keeps it. It cannot be stolen again.
- 7
Give player 1 the last word
After the last gift is opened, player 1 may swap with anyone, since they never got to steal. Then the game ends.
White elephant stealing rules
| Rule | Common version | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Steals per gift | 3, then the gift is frozen | Stops one gift circling all night |
| Steal back immediately | Not allowed | Prevents a two-person loop |
| Steals per turn | 1, then the robbed player takes the next move | Keeps turns moving |
| Final swap for player 1 | Allowed | Player 1 never had anything to steal |
| Opened gifts | Stay unwrapped and visible | Everyone can see what is worth stealing |
White elephant variations
- Yankee swap: the same game, the name used in New England
- Dirty Santa: the same game, common in the South, usually with more stealing
- Dice version: roll a die per turn; each number means open, steal, swap, pass left, or pass right
- Left-right story: someone reads a story, and gifts pass left or right every time those words come up
- Theme exchange: every gift fits a theme, like "something red" or "under $10 and useful"
- Virtual white elephant: gifts are shipped after the game, and players steal by screen-sharing photos
Secret Santa rules
Secret Santa is the quieter version: everyone draws one name in advance and buys a gift for only that person.
Need questions for each person? Use the free Secret Santa questionnaire.
- Draw names in secret, and redraw anyone who gets themselves
- Set one price limit and one exchange date for everyone
- Share a questionnaire or wish list so each Santa knows what to buy
- Keep who drew whom secret until the gifts are opened, if you reveal at all
- Have the organizer hold one spare gift in case someone forgets
Collect names before the party
Every one of these games starts with a headcount. A sign-up sheet collects who is playing, who is bringing which cookie recipe, and the gift limit everyone agreed to, so you know the night before how many numbers to put in the hat. Guests join from a link with no account.
